Connection Request

Hey Farah — interesting path from anthropology to venture scouting to founding. been thinking a lot about how early-stage crypto/web3 funds approach proprietary origination. would be good to connect.

Cold DM (Sales Nav)

Hey Farah, we both ended up on the investing side from pretty different directions — I came through banking at CS & Greenhill into growth equity in London, you came through anthropology and product into venture scouting. origination was always the same story for me — clear thesis, decent relationships, but no proprietary system of record tying anything together. every deal virtually sourced from scratch, nothing compounding over time. curious if that's still how most funds operate or if I'm behind the times? — Russ

Hey Farah, pretty different backgrounds but we both ended up in the investing world from unexpected angles — I came through IB at Credit Suisse & Greenhill into growth equity in London, you came through anthropology and product marketing into venture scouting and building companies. the pattern I keep seeing with most funds is weirdly consistent — strong thesis, solid network, but no proprietary system of record. the people, tools and ideas are never really connected. every deal virtually sourced from scratch, nothing compounds on itself. curious if that resonates with what you saw at Struck or if crypto/web3 funds have figured out something different? — Russ

Followup 1

hey Farah — no worries if the timing's off. most funds I talk to have tried some version of building origination in-house — analyst pulling from Pitchbook or Grata, maybe using ChatGPT to help qualify, dumping it into a spreadsheet. each piece kind of works, but there's no system of record tying it together. the people, tools and ideas are all disconnected, so everything ends up out of sync. been helping a few funds like Axiom work through that. curious if you've run into the same thing? — Russ

Followup 2 (Breakup)

totally get it if origination infrastructure isn't top of mind right now — most funds have 10 things ahead of it on the priority list. the funds I've seen crack it early just tend to compound deal flow in a way that's hard to replicate later. if it ever moves up the list, I'm easy to find. — Russ

Subject: web3 scouting → deal sourcing infra

Farah — We've been building deal sourcing infrastructure for investment firms — and your name came up while i was poking around the venture/crypto space. I know Struck is focused on blockchain and Web3 deals, and I noticed you've also spent time across early-stage ecosystems more broadly (Antler, the founder community stuff, etc.). We share a loosely similar path in a way — I went from banking (Credit Suisse, Greenhill) to direct investing at a growth fund in London, then built SearchLoop to solve my own sourcing problem. One of our clients, Axiom Equity, uses a bespoke system we built to map target markets → score companies on thesis-specific criteria → pull founder contacts → and run personalized outreach across LinkedIn and email. Partners get draft messages dropped into their inbox every morning. The whole thing runs in the background while the team focuses on deals. Given your scouting work and the sourcing side of what you've been doing, I wondered if you wanted to take a look under the hood and see if any of it's relevant — whether for Struck or whatever you're building next. I'm fairly free this week and next, just let me know a time that suits. Russ searchloop.ai linkedin.com/in/russellt23
