Hey David — we both ended up in PE from different directions. been thinking a lot about origination in IT services and gov solutions lately. would be good to connect.
Hey David, we both ended up in PE though from different angles — I came through IB in London, not engineering and large-scale program delivery like you. origination was always the same story for me — clear thesis, decent relationships, but no proprietary system of record tying anything together. every deal virtually sourced from scratch, nothing compounding over time. curious if that's still how most funds operate or if I'm behind the times? — Russ
Hey David, looks like we both landed in PE, though from pretty different paths — I came through banking at CS & Greenhill in London into growth equity, not engineering and program management into building out Plexos. the pattern I keep seeing with most funds is weirdly consistent — strong thesis, solid network, but no proprietary system of record. the people, tools and ideas are never really connected, so every deal is virtually sourced from scratch. nothing compounds on itself. curious if that resonates or if you've built something different at Plexos Capital? — Russ
hey David — no worries if the timing's off. most funds I talk to have tried some version of building origination in-house — analyst pulling from Pitchbook or Grata, maybe using ChatGPT to help qualify, dumping it into a spreadsheet. each piece kind of works, but there's no system of record tying it together. the people, tools and ideas stay disconnected, so there's tonnes of wasted energy. been helping a few funds like Mentmore Capital work through that. curious if you've hit the same wall at Plexos Capital? — Russ
totally get it if origination infrastructure isn't top of mind right now — most funds have 10 things ahead of it on the priority list. the funds I've seen crack it early just tend to compound deal flow in a way that's hard to replicate later. if it ever moves up the list, I'm easy to find. — Russ

David — We've been building custom deal sourcing systems for PE and growth funds that invest across a range of sectors — a couple of our clients have a similar profile to Plexos Capital in that they're smaller teams doing direct investment across multiple verticals. also, incidentally, we share a bit of overlap on the finance side — I spent time in M&A banking (Greenhill, Credit Suisse) before moving to growth equity at a fund in London doing direct deals into B2B services and software companies. figured it made sense to reach out. One client that might be relevant is Backer Group in the UK. Small team, investing in service and light manufacturing businesses. We built them a bespoke system that identifies targets matching their thesis, scores them on owner readiness and acquisition fit, pulls founder/owner contacts, and runs personalized outreach across email, LinkedIn, and even physical letters — all integrated live with their CRM. They don't have to think about origination, it just runs in the background while they focus on deals and portfolio. Another, Axiom Equity, uses a similar setup but tuned for software — mapping markets, scoring targets on their own criteria, and dropping draft outreach into partners' inboxes every morning. the infrastructure is always custom to the fund's thesis and workflow, so it'd look different for Plexos. but given the cybersecurity and healthcare analytics focus, there's a lot we could do around identifying early-stage companies and getting meetings with founders on the books. I wondered if you wanted to take a look under the hood? no worries if you're all covered on the sourcing side. fairly free this week and next, just let me know a time that suits. very best, Russell searchloop.ai linkedin.com/in/russellt23
