Connection Request

Hey Joshua — looks like we share a similar legal/finance → PE path, though I went IB (CS & Greenhill) into growth equity in London. been thinking a lot about proprietary origination in impact and healthcare lately. would be good to connect.

Cold DM (Sales Nav)

Hey Joshua, similar path into PE though I came through IB in London rather than Goldman and the legal track like you. origination was always the same story for me — clear thesis, decent relationships, but no proprietary system of record tying anything together. every deal virtually sourced from scratch, nothing compounding over time. curious if that's still how most funds operate or if I'm behind the times? — Russ

Hey Joshua, looks like we share a similar path into PE, though I came through banking at CS & Greenhill in London rather than Goldman and the legal side like you. different entry points but ended up in a similar place — building a thesis and trying to find the right deals to match it. the pattern I keep seeing with most funds is weirdly consistent — strong thesis, solid network, but no proprietary system of record. the people, tools and ideas are never really connected, so every deal is virtually sourced from scratch. nothing compounds on itself. curious if that resonates or if you've built something different at BUILD? — Russ

Followup 1

hey Joshua — no worries if the timing's off. most funds I talk to have tried some version of building origination in-house — analyst pulling from Pitchbook or Grata, maybe using ChatGPT to help qualify, dumping it into a spreadsheet. each piece kind of works, but there's no system of record tying it together. the people, tools and ideas are all disconnected, so there's tonnes of wasted energy and everything ends up out of sync. been helping a few funds like Mentmore work through that. curious if you've run into the same thing at BUILD? — Russ

Followup 2 (Breakup)

totally get it if origination infrastructure isn't top of mind right now — most funds have 10 things ahead of it on the priority list. the funds I've seen crack it early just tend to compound deal flow in a way that's hard to replicate later. if it ever moves up the list, I'm easy to find. — Russ

Joshua — Saw your path from Goldman through to launching BUILD Capital — I did something similar, banking at Credit Suisse and Greenhill in NYC and London before moving to the principal side deploying growth equity tickets in Europe. The investing was great, the sourcing was brutal — so I built SearchLoop to fix it. Backer Group in the UK uses it to source service and light manufacturing businesses for acquisition: define target criteria across a sector → score companies on fit → reach owners directly and book meetings. Given BUILD's focus on companies driving real and positive impact — sustainable tech like Einride and Xos, plus healthcare through PURE — there's a version of this that maps those verticals well. We've already built out pipelines in adjacent spaces from existing client work. Happy to jump on a quick call and show you what's already in there — worth a look?
